Executive Committee Candidates
Alessandro Solbiati
Declaration
I’m an Italian composer 65 years old and I live and work in Milano.
As a composer, my music has been performed more or less in every European country, I received commissions from a lot of international institutions (French Ministry of Culture (5 times), Radio France, the South Bank in London, Teatro alla Scala of Milano, Siemens Foundation, City of Augsburg etc.) and I’ve my music recorded on labels like Decca, Stradivarius, Bis records etc.
In the last 13 years I had three operas commissioned and performed in the Lyrical Theatres of Trieste, Torino and Bologna.
I’m absolutely involved in teaching Composition and in working, “defending” and proposing young composers: I teach composition since 1982, and in particular I teach in the Conservatory “G.Verdi” of Milan since 1995, being also the Vice-Director of this institution from 2000 and 2004 and responsible of the musical production of the Conservatory from 2013 and 2016.
At least fifteen my students are actually published and performed composers.
Believing in the importance to work for the diffusion of music of art, since 2013 I work for the Italian Radio (RAI-Radiotre), recording for them at least 160 emissions called “Lezioni di musica” proposing and introducing every time a piece of classical or contemporary music.
Since 2013 I am proud to be member of the Consiglio di Sorveglianza of SIAE and from 2015 to 2019 I proposed and worked a project of aid to Contemporary music, with the distribution, in 4 years, of 1.200.000€, to performers of contemporary music (ensembles, soloists etc.) and to composers as commissions for new works. Unfortunately this wonderful project called SIAE_Classici di oggi has been stopped by the problems given by Covid.
The role of a composer is not only to write music, but also to propose, defend and help the work of the other composers, young or less young, in the not easy world of today.

Amanda Brown

Our music and its integral role in a globalised world needs to be valued and protected.
I am committed to equitable remuneration for streaming audio and video on demand, safeguarding against writer buyouts and advocating for copyright legislation that future proofs creators across all platforms.
I’ve been fortunate to observe CIAM meetings for the last 6 months and have met some great people, with a wealth of knowledge and experience. I hope to contribute meaningfully to the CIAM ExCo, share my stories with creators from around the world and to help champion writers across all generations, genders and genres.

Anna Lidell
Declaration
I want to run for the board of CIAM, because I believe I can strengthen the voice and work of the council. As a board member, I will continue to contribute to CIAM’s ongoing work with projects, lobby and studies of rights. Furthermore, I will continue the work in the newsletter group, keeping my eyes on the latest news relevant for creators of music around the world. Illustrate them and formulate them in news.
Technology is a big interest of mine. I’m very interested in technology and how it changes human behavior and creativity. At the University of Copenhagen, I have studied literature, music and philosophy, which gives me a starting point for understanding major tendencies in technology so we as composers can face the future with open eyes. I think it’s crucial for the music business to focus intensely on the fast development of technologies. As Autor (songwriters and composers in Denmark, see bio), we’ve arranged several panels about AI in composing and curating of music, NFTs, Blockchain and other relevant developments in music business.

Biography
I started playing the violin at the age of four and since then I’ve embraced more and more instruments. Today I work as a composer and producer with a discography of more than 20 music releases well as compositions for films, tv-series, computer games, radio broadcasts and podcasts. As a performing artist, I’m part of the transatlantic pop duo Teenage Love, which combines playful lyrics and melodies with sparkly production coated in layers of lush classical strings. Currently, I’m composing for an italian tv-serie, and in march my music premiered on CPH:DOX film festival, earlier I composed also the title track from SKAM italia. All told, I always look for new ways of challenging myself and developing my music.
I run for the board of CIAM as chair of the organization of songwriters and composers in Denmark, Autor, and vice-chair in the Danish CMO KODA. Thus, my job is to give songwriters a strong public voice in Denmark, so both listeners and politicians understand conditions for creating and how it can be supported. Furthermore, I have a Master of Arts from the University of Copenhagen.

Dear colleagues! As a CIAM ExCo member since 2007, I participated in the transformation of CIAM into a true global organization of music authors as we know it today.
With your support, I would like to continue serving in the ExCo in the next mandate. Since the last election in Tokyo two and a half years ago the world changed dramatically, far beyond any possible prediction. We have experienced the pandemic and its consequences like lockdown, travel restrictions and bans on gatherings, including concerts and shows. Currently, the world is experiencing a geo-political transformation unprecedented since the Second World War. The global warming might have skipped out of our focus, but it is progressing. We all should be questioning the sustainability of our lifestyle and activities, and contemplate about the future of our civilization.
All of this impacts authors in a number of negative ways. Our royalties have first been diminished by the absence of live events and the closure of hotels, bars and restaurants; now they are pressured by inflation. In the coming years, most countries will prioritize energy transition and military expenditure over financing of cultural, social and artistic projects. I am afraid that the position of authors and artists around the world will further deteriorate. More than ever, now we need a strong and vigilant CIAM, with experienced people in the ExCo, people who have a broad and comprehensive view on the new reality. I believe I can serve this role well and I ask you for your support. Thank you.

Carlos Lara
Declaration
Dear CIAM members, my name is Carlos Lara.
I am a songwriter, and the Operative Vice President of SACM, Mexico’s Authors and Composers Society.
Everyone knows that creators are the heart of the music industry.
However, even in the middle of the most significant transformation and economic growth this industry has experienced, the future is threatening to leave us behind.
For over ten years, I have focused my job on new technologies, and I humbly believe that my expertise in this area has helped us achieve some of the most important goals we had as a collective.
SACM has been an essential part of Mexico’s incredible growth in the digital field; as a matter of fact, the statistics show that our market is one of the worldwide champions in this area.
Today, we are again on the verge of a new digital tsunami; Web 3.0, altogether with the Metaverse, Casual Gaming, Mobile Advertising, and the Internet of Things, could multiply our creator’s revenue in the decades to come.
That’s why I humbly ask you to consider my candidature to be part of the next CIAM Executive Committee.
I am sure that my experience in these areas could contribute to achieving the goals that our creators seek to accomplish in this fantastic moment of transition.
Thank you very much for your time.

Facundo Saravia
Declaration
Hello.
My name is Facundo Saravia.
I am Secretary of the Board of the Argentine Society of Authors and Composers -SADAIC-
I am an author and composer of Argentine folklore musical compositions.
As a performer, I was part of "Los Chalchaleros" (band\ensemble) for 25 years. I have toured the world extensively playing with the band and performing as a soloist as well, I have also released several albums.
The submission of my application as a candidate for the Executive Committee of CIAM is due to the fact that I consider regional representation to be very relevant, in an organization that brings together authors and music composers from all over the world.
Spanish-speaking Latin America, the region to which I belong, has a strong cultural imprint in a context of shared roots.
In addition, I consider of key importance the debate on ideas about a culture that, beyond regional differences, requires further integration every day, without losing the individuality of each territory.
CIAM is an extremely useful tool due to the participation of its creators in its operation, and I think it would be better if there were a diversity of territories represented, with the contribution of ideas from each reality.
From my personal and professional experience, I believe that my participation would be very useful.
I count on your support.
Thank you very much.

Javier Portugués
Declaration
My name is Javier Portugués Arribas and I am standing for election as a member of CIAM's ExCo on behalf of SGAE, of which I have been a member for more than thirty years and, for the last two years, an active member of the Board of Directors.
Without previous experience as a CIAM member, but with a real interest in contributing and helping colleagues in this new venture.
In SGAE we have a long experience in working and collaborating worldwide and, specifically, in the European and Latin American regions. Undoubtedly, the continuous connection between these two areas and our development of Spanish repertoire has always given us a position of management and connection with these repertoires and fellow partners and executives of the societies.
Also SGAE wants to maintain the level of work and continuity in building regional authors’ alliances. We constitute a bridge between the two authors' councils (WDW and CIAM) both in their internal developments and pursuit of common goals, as well as in the ongoing relationship and negotiation with CISAC. We aim to develop the inter-council working group to address and implement the roadmap of common objectives, as well as to renew relations with the associations and the ALCAM alliance in the Latin American region.
I therefore present my candidacy for the CIAM ExCo.

Declaration
Dear friends and colleagues,
CIAM is a wonderful institution !
If it hadn’t been founded already, we would have to found it today, (hooray )!
CIAM‘s like a big international orchestra, open to all music creators worldwide, respectfully open to all languages, cultures, regions, genres or styles, and beyond.
Thus CIAM is You !
Yes, Your voice is so important for the irresistible „Sound of CIAM“ , praising creativity, solidarity, diversity , humanity, especially freedom of thoughts, speech and the arts!
CIAM, Your institution, will never stop supporting the protection and enforcement of your rights and its adequate remuneration, globally and even in the metaverses !
That’s what I’m standing for as your ExCo candidate.
Nowadays there are increasingly both threats and booming chances for us and our collection societies:
- there‘s still massive rights grabbing piracy going on,
- coerced total buy-outs,
- disbalance between label and songwriter streaming revenues,
- missing metadata and data conflicts,
resulting in billions of unmatched monies , etc.
On the other hand, there’s a full plethora of new monetizing opportunities:
- thru Web3, NFTs, Metaverse, MLC,
- stunning value increases of catalogues,
- enhanced markets for music and music-related items on a global scale etc.
Yes, CIAM still gotta whole lotta work to do !!!
Dear friends, I’d be honoured if you would entrust me again with fighting for our rights and with serving the next CIAM ExCo with all my old chap’s knowledge and experience.
Cheers !

Marek Hojda
Declaration
My name is Marek Hojda. I am a songwriter, singer and keyboard player. Currently, in addition to my creative work I am the Polish collecting society ZAiKS board advisor and the Director of Music Export Poland, a foundation established by my CMO. I am also a board member of the European Music Exporters Exchange, the umbrella association for 26 European music export offices.
Some of you remember me as a former vice president of the Polish collecting society and a former member of the CIAM ExCo from 2016 to 2017.
When I ask for your vote, you could ask, why we need another European guy in the Executive Committee, when CIAM should represent worldwide composers. Well, Europe has been always leading in copyright issues. Bern Convention was established in Switzerland, private copy levies were invented in the 60s in Germany, and now, the new DSM directive is implemented in the EU member states, which gives hope to make big DSPs pay us, creators, fairer remuneration. But then, the ideas should be spread around the globe. That's our role and that's what our solidarity is all about. The word solidarity, associated with the Polish movement from the 80s, has now regained its value. It was my society that encouraged other CISAC members to help our Ukrainian brothers and sisters by launching the #Creators for Ukraine program. We coordinate aid from the funds contributed by CISAC members by buying medicines and transporting them to Ukraine. In properties owned by ZAIKS, we host artists, their families, and employees of cultural institutions from Ukraine. We give allowances to artists and their families in Poland. We support financially actions that help Ukrainian culture - because culture empowers democracy.
Ukraine is fighting also for our democracy and freedom, and we must stay united. We can’t let them down.
I represent the largest CEE CMO in the region. Poland and other countries, despite having problems with democracy and the rule of law, are fast-growing, emerging music markets.
As for me, besides composing, I have always been interested in new technologies in the music industry. At Berklee College of Music, I graduated in "Music Marketing" and in July I'm going back there to study Data Analytics. With a broader view of what's going on in the music industry, I'd like to come back to ExCo to prepare the music creators’ community for the new opportunities that are opening, and also to define the threats that may affect us. We once made a mistake, and deals were signed with DSPs that were unfavourable to creators. As a result, we are still struggling with the problem of low salaries. Let's not repeat that mistake and let's be prepared to fight for our rights in the fast-approaching reality of METAVERSE, the challenges that AI, blockchain, NFTs, and many other things that are invented now by thousands of startups. That's where I see my role at ExCo.

Stan Meissner
Declaration
I’m Stan Meissner. I’m a SOCAN board member and its past-president, and it has been my honour to have been a member of the Exco for the last few terms.
In my role as chair of the ExCo governance committee, together with my esteemed colleagues, we’ve had to deal with things we never could’ve imagined when our term began. But in revamping our internal rules to allow for this meeting and for online voting, we’ve made changes that will continue to serve us now and well into the future.
With everything happening in our world these days, with issues surrounding rights withdrawals, sales of catalogues, sales of writer shares, buyouts, NFTs etc., and all of the ways that can and likely will affect the PRO and MRO landscape globally, I can’t stress enough how important it is that on the ExCo, we have strong representation from North America, and specifically Canada, for its unique perspective.
We’ve all seen how the music business has been continually changing around us. And not just small changes. In the last 20 years alone, much of our music business has reinvented itself, probably at least twice. But the more things change, the more they stay the same. Some things remain constant.
The fight for songwriters to be compensated fairly for our work has remained constant. As you well know, at every turn there are many forces that continually conspire to grab as much of the pie as possible and creators are often left fighting over the scraps.
Our role at CIAM is to speak up. To be one voice, an international voice, that speaks purely for creators and our rights, and louder than any of those who continually claim to speak for us. Only we can truly speak, and fight, for ourselves.
I’ve spent my entire songwriting career, being involved in advocating for creator’s rights. Given all of my experiences, I feel I can continue to bring an informed perspective to the ExCo, and I would appreciate your vote and support.

Wally Badarou
Declaration
Hi, I am Wally Badarou, composer songwriter from Benin, West Africa, french citizen and representing Sacem here.
During my first mandate as part of the Executive Committee of CIAM, I have enjoyed the privilege to witness, measure up and participate to the collective effort that has been carried out through these last years, coping with all the ubiquituous and everlasting challenges authors right had to face, and will not stop facing anytime soon: those that were and will remain forever inherent to the very nature of authors right, added to those the pandemic, the politics and all the new technologies have and will continue to throw before us, here and around the world. I therefore wish to continue participating to that effort so that, together with your support, we can carry the fight in a positive, pro-active and collective spirit. Many thanks in advance.

Declaration
No matter what genre of music you work in, no matter what culture you grew up in or language you sing, no matter who you are or where you are, if you create music, CIAM is about you.
It is a very special privilege to play a role in this unique global fellowship of music creators, a community it has taken decades to build. And going forward our job is to continue to build and strengthen our alliances, to continue to learn from each other, to continue advocating for diversity, for equity, and always advocating for our rights wherever and whenever they are challenged or threatened, and for a fair and sustainable music ecosystem.
Being part of CIAM has been one of the greatest honors of my life, I do not take it for granted, and I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to serve my community.
I want to thank our entire outgoing Exco, and in particular our Working Group Chairs, Anna Liddell, Brendan Gallagher, Stan Meissner, Marvin Dolgay, our two Vice Presidents, Jorg Evers and Arrien Molema, our Honorary President Lorenzo Ferrero, and we would be lost without Luisa Luna, our CIAM Coordinator.
Thank you all. I very much look forward to continuing this important journey together.
